Guitar Project #2
After completing my first guitar, I already wanted to build another. I went to Goodrich Lumber to see what they had for types of wood. I have always wanted a mahogany guitar because they are very sturdy, dont dent easily, and have a very nice sound to them. I found a 6'x5"x2" mahogany board, which would be the perfect size for a guitar body. I made sure the board was straight and didnt have any chunks missing.
I also purchased some large clamps and some Gorilla Glue.
I cut the 6' board into three 2' peices. I lightly sanded each peice and got ready to glue the three together side by side to make a 22"x15"x2" board.
Gorilla Glue is very strong wood glue and will actually make the wood structure stronger. The wood will break at a non-glued part before it will break at the seam where it was glued.
I dampened the edges to be glued with a damp cloth, and applied a small line of glue across the surface. Only a small amount is needed because it will expand as it dries.
The glue takes 3-4 hours to set. I let it set 5 hours before I started to do some light sanding on the top face to remove some of the glue and splinters. I left the clamps on over night however just to ensure that it dried thorougly.
The next step was I drew out the shape of the body that I am going to cut out. I drew how I would like the body to look, and then afterwards I drew around that line about a half an inch away with a red pencil. I will cut on the red line, and round the edges and sand it to the black line which is the actual shape of the body that I would like.
